Developing Skillfulness
December 12th, 2025.
“And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” (Psalm 78:72)
Skillfulness is essential for exceptional leadership. Psalm 78:72 highlights David’s leadership as both skillful and heartfelt. He combined integrity with competence, leading effectively because he developed his abilities. Skillfulness is not innate; it is cultivated through discipline, practice, and dependence on God.
David’s skillfulness was evident in his ability to lead, strategize, and inspire. He was not only a man of faith but also a man of excellence. His leadership was marked by wisdom, courage, and competence. Leaders who neglect skillfulness may have good intentions but lack effectiveness. Exceptional leaders understand that skillfulness strengthens their influence and effectiveness.
Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.” Excellence opens doors of influence. Leaders who develop their skills are positioned for greater impact. Skillfulness honors God and inspires confidence in those they lead.
Jesus modeled skillfulness in ministry. He taught with authority, healed with compassion, and led with wisdom. His effectiveness was rooted in His intimacy with the Father and His mastery of His calling. Leaders must follow His example, honing their skills through discipline and dependence on God.
Skillfulness also requires humility. Leaders must recognize their need to grow and be willing to learn from others. David’s skillfulness was not just natural talent; it was cultivated through years of shepherding, worship, and battle. Leaders who commit to growth demonstrate humility and wisdom.
Ultimately, skillfulness is about stewardship. God entrusts leaders with gifts, and they must develop those gifts to serve effectively. Psalm 78:72 shows that David’s skillfulness was paired with integrity. Skill without integrity is dangerous, but skill with integrity is powerful. Exceptional leaders cultivate both.
Prayer
