Marriage and Spiritual Growth

November 28th, 2025.

“What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:6)

Marriage is not only a union of two individuals; it is a spiritual journey designed by God. When Jesus emphasized that what God has joined together should not be separated, He was pointing to the divine nature of marriage. It is not merely a social contract or cultural tradition but a covenant established by God Himself.

This covenant is meant to foster spiritual growth. Two people, with different backgrounds and experiences, come together to sharpen one another in faith. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” In marriage, spouses are called to encourage each other toward godliness, prayer, and obedience.

Yet, spiritual growth in marriage does not happen automatically. It requires intentionality. Couples must prioritize shared devotion, prayer, and worship. When both spouses value spiritual growth, their marriage becomes a sanctuary where God’s presence dwells. But when spiritual development is neglected, the marriage may struggle under the weight of worldly distractions.

Marriage amplifies who we are spiritually. If one spouse is committed to Christ while the other is indifferent, tension arises. This is why Paul warns against being unequally yoked (2 Corinthians 6:14). Spiritual unity ensures that both spouses walk in the same direction, pursuing God’s kingdom together.

Consider the impact of spiritual growth in marriage:

  • It strengthens resilience during trials. Couples who pray together find strength in God’s promises.

  • It deepens intimacy. Shared worship and devotion create a bond that transcends physical attraction.

  • It reflects Christ’s love for the church. Marriage becomes a living testimony of God’s covenant love.

Ultimately, marriage is a platform for sanctification. Through patience, forgiveness, and love, spouses grow to reflect Christ more fully. The challenges of marriage are not obstacles but opportunities for spiritual maturity.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for designing marriage as a covenant that fosters spiritual growth. Help me to prioritize prayer, devotion, and worship in my relationships. May my marriage reflect Your love and draw us closer to You. Amen.

Reflection Question

How can you and your spouse (or future spouse) intentionally grow spiritually together?
