Purity — Sex Before Marriage is Forbidden

December 20th, 2025.

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” (Hebrews 13:4)

Purity is foundational to God’s design for marriage. Hebrews 13:4 makes it clear that the marriage bed must be kept pure, and that sexual immorality brings God’s judgment. This principle is not optional; it is a command rooted in God’s holiness.

Sex before marriage undermines trust. When couples engage in premarital sex, they lay a foundation of suspicion and insecurity. Trust is the glue that holds marriage together, and without it, the union becomes fragile. A marriage built on compromise rather than purity is like a house with loose bricks — it cannot withstand pressure.

God calls His people to holiness. 2 Corinthians 6:18 urges believers to separate themselves from impurity, promising that God will receive them as His children. Purity before marriage is not about restriction but about protection. It safeguards intimacy, honors God, and prepares couples for covenant faithfulness.

Cohabitation without marriage is also contrary to God’s design. Living together outside of covenant commitment cheapens the sacredness of marriage. It treats intimacy as casual rather than covenantal. God’s Word is clear: intimacy belongs within marriage, not outside of it.

Purity reflects Christ’s relationship with the church. Just as Christ presents His bride holy and blameless, so couples are called to honor God by keeping themselves pure until marriage. This obedience invites God’s blessing and ensures that the marriage rests on a foundation of trust and holiness.

Prayer

Lord, help me to honor You by walking in purity. Guard my heart and body from compromise, and prepare me to enter marriage with holiness and trust. May my life reflect Your covenant faithfulness. Amen.

Reflection Question

How does purity before marriage build trust and strengthen the foundation for a godly union?
