The Countdown We Ignore
November 15th, 2025.
Job 14:5 (NIV) – “A person’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.”
From the moment we are born, the countdown to our final breath begins. It’s a sobering truth that most people avoid thinking about. We celebrate birthdays with joy, but rarely acknowledge that each one brings us closer to our “deathday.” Job 14:5 reminds us that our time on earth is not infinite. God has set a limit—a boundary we cannot cross. No one escapes death, and no one knows exactly when it will come.
This reality should not lead us to fear, but to reflection. If you died today, what would happen next? Would it be the end of your existence, or the beginning of something eternal?
The truth is, death is not the end—it’s a transition. Jesus Christ, the only one who died and rose again without human intervention, revealed what lies beyond. In Matthew 28, we see the resurrection of Jesus as the ultimate proof that life continues after death.
Jesus taught that when a person dies, their spirit and soul—identical in form to their physical body—leave the body and journey to one of two destinations: Heaven or Hell. Luke 16 gives us a vivid picture of this reality. The rich man who ignored God’s call found himself in torment, while Lazarus, the poor man who trusted God, found peace in Abraham’s bosom.
This isn’t fiction—it’s truth. People of all ages die. Youth does not guarantee time. Health does not guarantee safety. Wealth does not guarantee eternity. The only guarantee is the choice we make while we are alive.
So, what determines where we go when we die? It’s not our good deeds, religious rituals, or moral behavior. It’s our response to Jesus Christ. He came from Heaven, lived among us, died for our sins, and rose again. He alone knows the way to eternal life because He came from eternity. John 14:6 says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
If you died today, would you be ready? Would you be confident in your destination? The time to choose is now. Heaven and Hell are real, and eternity is irreversible. Choose Jesus today—not out of fear, but out of faith.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of life and the truth of eternity. Help me to live with awareness that my days are numbered. I choose to believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Prepare my heart for eternity, and help me to walk in Your truth daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Question
If today were your last day on earth, where would you spend eternity—and what needs to change to be sure?
