The Husband’s Duty to Love

December 22nd, 2025.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25)

Marriage is built on love, but not just any love — it is built on Christlike love. Paul commands husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church. This is a high calling, because Christ’s love was sacrificial, unconditional, and eternal. He gave Himself up, laying down His life for His bride.

This principle teaches that marriage is not about self-centeredness but about self-sacrifice. A husband’s duty is to die to himself, to put his wife’s needs above his own, and to give himself fully to her. Love in marriage is not about convenience or feelings; it is about covenant commitment.

Christ’s love was demonstrated through service. He washed His disciples’ feet, healed the broken, and bore the cross. Husbands are called to mirror this servant-hearted love. Leadership in marriage is not about control but about care. It is about protecting, providing, and nurturing.

A husband who refuses to love sacrificially misrepresents Christ. Marriage is meant to reflect the gospel, and when husbands love their wives with Christlike devotion, they display God’s covenant love to the world.

This love also fosters trust and respect. When wives see genuine love, they respond with honor and submission. Love creates an atmosphere of safety, intimacy, and joy. Without love, marriage becomes a burden; with love, it becomes a blessing.

Ultimately, the husband’s duty to love is not optional — it is a command. To neglect it is to disobey God. To embrace it is to reflect Christ.

Prayer

Lord, teach husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Help them to walk in sacrificial love, putting their wives’ needs above their own. May marriages reflect Your covenant love and bring glory to Your name. Amen.

Reflection Question

How can husbands demonstrate Christlike love in practical, everyday ways within their marriage?
