The Man as Head of the Home
December 16th, 2025.
“But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” (1 Corinthians 11:3)
God designed marriage with order and leadership. Scripture teaches that the man is the head of the home, just as Christ is the head of the church. This principle is not about superiority or domination but about responsibility and accountability.
In Genesis 3:9, when Adam and Eve sinned, God did not call out to both of them. He said, “Adam, where are you?” This shows that God held Adam accountable for the household. Eve’s instructions from God came through Adam, highlighting that leadership in the home was entrusted to him.
When a wife recognizes and submits to her husband’s leadership, peace naturally envelopes the home. Ephesians 5:24 says, “Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.” Submission is not weakness; it is alignment with God’s order. A home cannot thrive under two competing leaders.
Rebellion against God’s design brings disorder. A woman who refuses to submit to her husband’s leadership rejects the covering God has provided. Anything without a head is a monster, and a home without proper leadership is vulnerable to chaos.
At the same time, headship is not a license for abuse or selfishness. The man’s leadership must reflect Christ’s love — sacrificial, servant-hearted, and protective. Leadership in marriage is about responsibility, not privilege. It is about guiding the family in God’s ways, providing spiritual direction, and ensuring the household honors the Lord.
When husbands lead with love and wives respond with respect, marriage reflects the beautiful order God intended. This alignment brings peace, unity, and blessing.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for establishing order in marriage. Help me to honor Your design for leadership in the home. Teach husbands to lead with love and wives to respond with respect, so that marriages may reflect Christ and the church. Amen.
Reflection Question
How does understanding God’s design for headship in marriage shape the way you view leadership and submission in the home?
