The Pursuit of God

November 22nd, 2025.

Psalm 63:1 (NIV) – “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.”

Spiritual depth begins with spiritual desire. You cannot become spiritual by accident—it requires pursuit. David, the man who served God’s purpose in his generation, was also a man of intense longing for God. In Psalm 63:1, he declares his thirst for God in a dry and weary land. This wasn’t poetic language—it was the cry of a soul desperate for divine connection.

If you’re called to do spiritual work, you must first cultivate a hunger for God. You must desire Him more than success, more than comfort, more than recognition. Spirituality begins with pursuit. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” God doesn’t hide from the casual seeker—He reveals Himself to the desperate.

This longing is echoed in Psalm 42:1: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” The imagery is vivid—a deer, parched and panting, searching for water. That’s the posture of a spiritual person. They don’t just want God—they need Him.

Spiritual hunger leads to spiritual transformation. When you pursue God, you begin to reflect Him. Your thoughts shift, your desires change, and your capacity to carry out divine assignments increases. You become sensitive to His voice, responsive to His leading, and aligned with His heart.

But this pursuit must be intentional. It’s not enough to say you love God—you must seek Him. You must carve out time, create space, and prioritize His presence. David said in Psalm 63:8, “I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.” Clinging is not casual—it’s committed. It’s the posture of someone who knows that without God, they are nothing.

Spiritual people are not perfect—they are passionate. They stumble, but they keep seeking. They get weary, but they don’t quit. Their pursuit is not driven by duty—it’s driven by desire.

So today, ask yourself: Are you pursuing God or just performing for Him? Are you seeking His face or just His hand? The depth of your spirituality will be determined by the depth of your desire.

You’ve been called to serve your generation. But before you serve, you must seek. Before you pour out, you must be filled. And that filling comes from pursuit.

Prayer

Lord, I want to seek You with all my heart. Stir up a hunger in me that cannot be satisfied by anything else. Teach me to pursue You daily, to cling to You, and to find joy in Your presence. Let my desire for You shape my life and empower my calling. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question

What does your current pursuit of God look like—and how can you deepen it starting today?
